Das Burgtor ist nicht etwa das ehemalige Tor der Burganlage, sondern ein Stadttor, das auf den Burgstall hinaus führt und die Stadt nach der Zerstörung der Burg schützen sollte.

Der Ursprung der Stadt ist der Ortsteil Detwang. Dort wurde anfänglich durch den Adligen Reiniger eine Pfarrei, später eine Grafenburg über dem Fluss Tauber (od der Tauber) errichtet. Diese Burg wurde 1356 durch ein Erdbeben zerstört. Am 15.05.1274 wurde Rothenburg durch König Rudolf von Habsburg zur Reichsstadt erhoben. Den Titel verlor sie erst wieder 1803. Heute ist die mittelfränkische Kleinstadt eine weltbekannte Kleinstadt wegen ihres weitgehend erhaltenen Altstadtkerns aus dem Mittelalter.

The origin of the town is the district Detwang. There was initially a parish founded by the nobles Reiniger, later he built a castle above the river Tauber (od der Tauber). This castle was destroyed in 1356 by an earthquake. On 05/15/1274 Rothenburg was raised by King Rudolf von Habsburg to an city of empire. She lost the title again until the 1803rd.
