Summary edit

Description
English: This photograph is one of a series attributed to Tom Aitken which show different processes in the construction of a new railway bridge by Royal Engineers. This view shows some of the men sawing huge baulks of timber to the correct length to make the vertical piles of the bridge.

Many of the men working on this type of project would have been time-served engineers in civilian life.
