Summary edit

Description
English: Sandown Class Mine Countermeasures Vessel HMS Bangor is pictured near Tobruk, Libya.

HMS Bangor and HMNS Vlaardigen had been given the task of clearing a shipping lane into the Key Port of Tobruk, Libya. Once this task had been completed HMS Bangors divers seized the opportunity to hone their skills in the shallow waters off the Libyan coast.

HMS Bangor is the ninth of the Sandown class of minehunters and was built by Vosper Thorneycroft UK Ltd at Woolston, Southampton. She was launched on the 16th April 1999 by Lady Lisa Spencer.

HMS Bangor is the first ship to be closely affiliated to Northern Ireland for over 15 years and has other official affiliations with the town of Bangor, Bangor Combined Cadet Force and Bangor Grammar School. The crew are very proud of her battle honours from Dieppe in 1942, Normandy and the English Channel in 1944 and most recently Al Faw in 2003.
