A gravura, reproduzida da “Ilustração Brasileira” de 1878, mostra o começo da Rua da Guarda Velha (trecho absorvido pelo novo jardim do largo da Carioca), vendo-se, ao centro, o antigo edifício da Imprensa Nacional, em estilo gótico manuelino, construído quatro anos antes pelo Visconde do Rio Branco, então Ministro da Fazenda, e, no canto, à direita, parte do velho chafariz da Carioca e a escadaria para o convento e igrejas de Santo Antônio e São Francisco da Penitência. Por cima do telhado da Imprensa Nacional, vislumbra-se, ao fundo, a coberta do Teatro Lírico, também já desaparecido. (Charles Julius Dunlop)
