tioned in the P.S. seems to be Ros-settis version of Dantes Vita Nuova. G 98 RUSKIN TO ROSSETTI (Denmark Hill. ? Summer 1855.)Dear Rossetti, I think you and your pupil have judgedvery wisely in this matter, and I will so arrangeit with Woodward, and let you know his ideas assoon as may be. I am delighted with the sketch. Many thanks for explanation about Dante andBeatrice. Is it not very curious that there shouldbe no mention of her marriage in the Vita f Doyou know, I cannot help suspecting the antiquariesare wrong in her identification, and that shenever was married. I understand every feelingexpressed in the Vita Nuova but this calmness ofsilence on the supposition of her marriage, nor doI quite understand his continued worship beingso absolute—the image of her being in no wisedethroned by her marriage, but put in heaven ashigh as ever. What do you feel about this ? Always yours, J. RUSKIN. I like the translation exceedingly. I come onTuesday if fine. Best regards to your brother.
Text Appearing After Image:
ROSSETTI TO MADOX BROWN 99 42.Dante Rossetti to Madox Brown, Finchley. Browns picture here mentioned must be The Lastof England. By the Great Prohibited Ruskin ismeant. Before the final words, I dont encourageher/ there is a dark ink-smudge, illegible. (Chatham Place. 13 September 1855.) Dear Brown, Im delighted to hear youVe done yourpicture at last. . . . Thursday is the evening onwhich Mrs. Kincaid is to meet Lizzy here, tosettle matters for their departure. If I can pos-sibly get away to you rather late, I shall. . . . Except the Great Prohibited, I scarcely seeany one who will not visit your picture withoutmy aid. . . . Poor Liz is not so well, I fear, as might bewished, and I dont like this cold setting in justas she is ready to go. I improved that drawing with the buttercupsmost immensely, and the G. P. aforesaid gaveme ^30 for it. Im well on since then with 100 ROSSETTI TO MADOX BROWN another (Launcelot and Guinever) also destined for the Initials. . . . Your affectionate D. G
