Kommentar: Katharina II. (1762-1796), russische Zarin und Herzogin von Holstein-Gottorf, geborene Prinzessin Sophie Auguste Friederike von Anhalt-Zerbst-Dornburg, genannt Katharina die Große, wurde 1729 in Stettin geboren und starb 1796 in St. Petersburg. Sie heiratete 1745 den russischen Thronfolger Großfürst Peter Fjodorowitsch. Nach dessen Amtsantritt putschte sie gegen ihren Mann und ließ sich zur Kaiserin ausrufen. Sie regierte das Land 34 Jahre und reformierte die Verwaltung, gründete Schulen und öffnete Russland für die europäische Kunst und Literatur. Zu ihren Günstlingen zählten der spätere polnische König Stanislaus II. August Poniatowski und der Fürst Potjomkin, sie stand im Briefwechsel u. a. mit Voltaire und Montesquieu.
