Notes

Notes from Kloss, William, et al. Art in the White House: A Nation's Pride. Washington, D.C.: The White House Historical Association, 2008:
"We are first struck by the distinctive colors that glow in Rutland Falls, Vermont. The luminous pinks and mauves of the towering clouds and the foreground pool give an expressive voice to [the] landscape . . . .

". . . We see the day ending with the moon ascending; moving water and still water; and the sawmill, epitome of modern busy-ness, here empty and inactive.

"The waterfall is flanked by a tiny figure of a trout fisherman--the sole human being-- and by the prominent mill."
