| Description | This is the Memorial to the seventeen men and boys who lost their lives in the RNLI Lifeboat, Mary Stanford on Thursday 15th November 1928. The Memorial stands in the Churchyard of the Church of the Holy Spirit at Rye Harbour. The Lifeboat was called out in the early hours of Thursday 15th November 1928 when a collision between a Latvian and a German ship took place in the English Channel. The Lifeboat was an open boat powered by sails and oars and was beach launched, after three attempts to launch the Lifeboat they were successful and started out for the scene of the collision. Shortly afterwards the coastguard at Rye Harbour received a message from the German ship that she had picked up the Latvian crew, a signal was launched directing that the Lifeboat return to shore but because of the conditions the signal was not seen. The Crew searched the area for four hours and were returning to Rye Harbour when their Lifeboat was capsized by a huge wave near the mouth of the River Rother, all the crew were drowned. It is the worst loss of life in the 190 year history of the RNLI. |
