Description
The experts at Bruun Rasmussen had some problems establishing the identity of Mr. Madsen. The seller at the 2004 auction believed he had been a merchant and ship owner in Svendborg. However, on the verso of the painting there was an inscription saying Chr. Madsen, fød d. 6te Juli 1764, malet i Marts af S. L. Lange (Chr. Madsen, born July 6, 1764, painted in March by S. L. Lange.). The experts believed he was named Christian Madsen, but supplied no further information. The birthdate eliminates a lot of Christian Madsens, but it leaves us with Christen Madsen, born July 6, 1764. He did not live in Svendborg, but not far away at the manor of Hjortholm, which he owned 1782-1823. He even built its new main building in 1789. He died in 1832. His data can be found in the records of the Royal Copenhagen Shooting Society, published in 1934. [1]
