客船並みの豪華設備を誇り、フェリーとしては国内最長の全長224.5mで海上交通安全法で「巨大船」に分類される。

はまなす（3代目）は世界で初めてCRP ポッド推進システムを採用した大型高速フェリーである。CRP ポッド推進システムとはディーゼル機関により駆動される従来1軸船と同様配置の主プロペラとその直後に配置されたアジポッドのプロペラを各々逆方向に回転させる推進システムである。

2軸船は安全性に優れるが、1軸船と比較すると船形がスマートでなく、省エネルギーにならない欠点があった。しかし世界初の試みとなる1軸プロペラとポッド推進器との組合せで、優れた操船性能に加え、2重反転プロペラとして推進効率の改善と大幅な省エネルギー効果が生まれ、従来の2軸フェリーに対し13%以上の推進性能向上が図られ、燃費改善による環境負荷低減、運航コスト削減が可能となった。またポッド本体を回頭させることで任意の方向に推力を発生させることが可能なため港内操船では優れた操縦性能を有する。 

建造の経緯 [編集]

新日本海フェリーは関西～北海道を結ぶべく1969年に設立され、1970年7月31日に9,365tと当時世界最大のフェリーとなる「すずらん丸」を建造した。この航路は冬季の日本海でも欠航しないよう10,000tクラスの船を前提としていたが青函連絡船の逼迫を背景として商業的に成立するということであえてこの大きさで建造したものである。舞鶴～小樽26時間をうたい文句としていたが、予定通りの性能が出ず運航時間は30時間、次いで採算性も考え32時間で運航していた。

舞鶴～小樽航路はサービスとしては問題もあったにしろ、たちまちに人気を集め冬も欠航せず好成績となった。このため急遽建造が決定されたのが「フェリーはまなす」である。しかし当時の京都府知事蜷川虎三は舞鶴入港を拒否したが、1972年5月7日の完成直後に一転して舞鶴入港が急遽認められた。舞鶴～小樽航路は週2便から週4便に増強され、冬に京阪神で消費されるジャガイモやたまねぎのほとんどはこの航路で運ばれているといわれた。当初から寄航していた敦賀に加え、さらに新潟寄航も決定し、1973年7月には第3船となる「フェリーあかしあ」も就航した。 

命名の由来 [編集]

北海道の自然を代表するハマナスの名をとり命名された
