1) In this old tram from the 1970's the passengers have to climb stairs, which causes a risk of falling. Several handgrips are added to decrease the risk.

2) The edges of the door contain a pressure detector opening the doors whenever there is obstacle (like hand etc) between the doors. The detector is used to avoid entrapment accidents. The doors operate automatically, and the driver is informed whenever any of the doors is open. The tram won't leave the stop before all the doors are safely closed.

3) Other kind of detectors like light cells can be used to give information whether there are obstacles like passengers between the doors or whether the doors can be shut. Detectors may give also information whether the doors are open or safely closed.

In addition, the door can be used as an emergency exit - when the tram is stopped, the doors can be unlocked with an emergency switch. The driver can typically see at least some of the doors via mirrors, or in rare cases on a camera monitoring system.
