Description
English: Saint Katarina (St Catherine's) church, with the gothic interior, is rated the most beautiful of all the ruins of Visby.

The Church was founded in 1233 and is dedicated to St Catherine of Alexandria. It belonged to one of Sweden's first Franciscan monasteries and the friars were mendicant order.

By the early 14th century, the popularity of the Franciscans was calling for a new church and the church was now widened and tall, fine windows installed in the chancel.

St Catherine's symbols are the sword and the wheel, which has become known as the Catherine wheel.

The small monastery survived until the 16th century.
