Tablette à écrire Paris 1320-1330 Ivoire Florence, museo nazionale del Bargello Louis IX, connu sous le nom de Saint Louis (1214 - 1270) a été considéré comme un saint de son vivant, Il est le 9ème roi de France (dynastie des Capétiens). Il conduit la 7ème croisade (1248-1254) qui est un grave échec et il meurt à Tunis au commencement de la 8ème Croisade . Les ouvriers qui, sur ordre du roi, travaillent à la restauration des remparts sont massacrés. Les soldats francs battent en retraite. Sitôt qu'il apprend ces nouvelles, Louis IX vient à leur secours. Dès son arrivée, en juin, le roi veut faire ensevelir les victimes selon le rite chrétien. "Lui même, en personne, portait les corps tout puants pour les mettre en terre dans des fosses, sans se boucher le nez, et les autres se bouchaient le nez", relate Jean de Joinville qui a suivi la 7ème croisade et en est le chroniqueur. C'est l'épisode représenté fidèlement sur la plaquette.
