English: A grisaille by Jean de Saint-Igny depicting the Salle du Palais-Cardinal during a performance. This image is labelled Fig. 5 (after page 403) from the article by Agne Beijer "Le ballet de la prospérité des armes de France", pp. 377–403 in the source. The ballet was performed on 7 February 1641. Beijer identifies the figures in the image: The owner of the theatre, Cardinal Richelieu (who died 4 December 1642), is shown seated on a stool holding a hat in his right hand. To his left in armchairs are Louis XIII, his queen (Ann of Austria), the dauphin (the future Louis XIV, born 5 September 1638), and in the arms of two ladies, the dauphin's younger brother Philippe (the future Philippe I, Duke of Orléans, who was born 21 September 1640). The engraving known as Le Soir by Michael Van Lochom, which is likely based on this grisaille, is frequently reproduced. For example it appears in The New Grove Dictionary of Opera (although reversed left to right). Instead of Cardinal Richelieu, Van Lochom's engraving is believed by Powell to depict Gaston, Duke of Orléans (the younger brother of Louis XIII). |
