Summary edit

Description
English: Located in Amphawa subdistrict, Amphawa district, Amphawa Floating Market is Thailand’s most crowded market despite an area of approximately less than 2 square kilometres. During the reign of King Prasat Thong of the Ayutthaya kingdom (1630-1655), the area of this subdistrict was named “Bang Chang”. In Rattanakosin Era, its name was “Amphawa Canal Market”, according to documentation of King Rama V’s private trip. “Amphawa” generally refers to “Mango”, but another meaning is “A tiny aquatic plant strives along the banks of a canal”. At present, this market, “Amphawa Evening Floating Market” by its official name, is open on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays from late afternoon until late evening. This evening market is biologically fertile, and its location is considered advantageous to other floating counterparts as it is along an estuary where fresh water, brackish water, and seawater meet. This area is, therefore, replete with a wide variety of food products. Strolling along the canal to appreciate the authentic beauty of wooden houses and traditional pharmaceutical shops that still use traditional Chinese weighing scales is quite a popular activity. Visitors can also make a day trip cruising along the Mae Klong River and stopping by temples to pay homage. At night, the Thailand’s largest enchanting world of fireflies swarming round Mangrove Apple trees is awaiting for those who wish to experience the natural wonder. Homestays are also offered here. By all mentioned above, foreign visitors thus nicknamed this place a true “Vanice of the East”.
