English: San Marino, a republic in northern Italy, is one of the smallest in the world with an area of 60.5 sq. km and a population of about 28,000. The foundation of San Marino's economy is tourism, agriculture, manufacturing, and the sale of postage stamps. San Marino was founded in 301 AD by a stonecutter, Marinus, who sought refuge on Mount Titano from religious persecution. In 1291 Pope Nicholas IV recognized San Marino's independence. The ASTER image was acquired on June 7, 2001, covers an area of 23 x 23.5 km, and is centered near 43.9 degrees north latitude, 12.4 degrees east longitude. |
