he nails back to their origin, it was found that the ironfrom which they were made came from Eastern Pennsylvania mines, theore of which had a heavy copper content. There are several methods of galvanizing steel, but only one whichhas the real merit of extreme durability. This process, known as hot-dipping, is as follows: In the particular instance of shingle nails, a batch of nails to begalvanized is tossed into a wire basket, which is then dipped into a hotsolution of molten zinc, and the zinc which has an affinity for steel, willcoat the entire nail with a relatively thick coating of zinc and lead mix-ture known as spelter. The nails are then taken out and tumbled toremove surplus spelter. The recent improvement in this process hasenabled the manufacturers to produce a practically smooth galvanizednail, which any carpenter may carry in his mouth without any dangerof generating canker sores.
