La estatua en bronce es obra del escultor José Villalobos y Miñor. Jose del Rio Sainz, conocido popularmente por Pick, fue navegante, periodista y gran poeta del mar.

Fue nombrado socio de Honor del Ateneo de Santander, recibió el premio Fastenrath por su libro Versos del Mar y otros poemas, y así mismo la Federación Nacional de Asociaciones de Prensa de España le elige Periodista de Honor.
