Description

Charles Heal’s Scammell CD45 chain drive tractor JHU632 ‘The Rocket’ of 1946, and Anderton & Rowland Showtrac 4x2 ballast tractor, no. 12, DCO265 ‘Dragon’ (Chassis 6209) built August 1946, at Dingles Fairground Heritage Centre, Lifton, Devon.

Charles Heal was one of Bristol’s best-known showmen. He was born in Glastonbury in 1879, and by 1908 was the proprietor of a steam roundabout. Charles Heal married Agnes Young in Bristol in 1899, and together built up a good business, travelling one of the biggest and most splendid sets of Galloping Horses in the country.

The Showtrac was a short-wheelbase 4x2 ballast tractor, one of the few vehicles ever designed specifically for fairground use. It could be supplied with a rear body (with half-height roller shutter access doors), winch, and dynamo with the ballast block underneath. Eighteen were built, to varying specifications (not all had the body fitted), between December 1945 and September 1948. Seventeen have been preserved. There are many look-alike Scammell tractors, but genuine Showtracs had a special "Showtrac" badge on the radiator, and a full-width cab.

Albert Haslam was an illusionist who travelled under the stage name of Professor Anderton, and his son, Arthur, became an intrepid lion tamer known as Captain Rowland. Together they travelled a show presenting magic and animal acts. Later they founded the firm of Anderton & Rowland which still presents fairs in the West Country.
