DescriptionScarlet, Orange, and Pink Dress and Coat worn by Jacqueline Kennedy during her arrival in Rajasthan.jpg |
English: Maker: Gustave Tassell (American, 1926 - )
Date(s) of Materials: 1962 Place Made: United States Medium: Ribbed silk matelasse Dimensions: Dress: 41" center back; Coat: 43" center back Description: A sleeveless dress with matching coat in scarlet, orange and hot pink printed and ribbed silk matelasse. The dress is a shell with an A-line skirt, the coat has 3/4 length sleeves, collar and two buttons to the waist. Historical Note: This ensemble was worn by First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy during her arrival in Rajasthan, India on March 18, 1962. The First Lady also wore this ensemble in Karachi on March 25, 1962 during her State Visit to Pakistan. For her state clothing Jacqueline Kennedy generally avoided prints, preferring the impact of strong solid colors. In this rare exception she chose a pointillist pattern that, seen from afar, blends into an even more intense hue that a solid color could be expected to achieve. She also wore the dress on its' own for a camel ride with her sister on the grounds of President Mohammad Ayub Khan's residence in Karachi. |
