Description

4523 University Way NE, University District, Seattle, Washington. This building historically included the address 4521 University Way, to which a building permit was issued to George B. Baker, offices in the Eitel Building, on June 29, 1922, with Victor W. Voorhees listed as architect. Most sources give it a construction date of 1924 and neither address appears in local papers until 1925. An early tenant was the Hanson & Smith grocery and by 1938 it was Brehm's, one of a chain of several grocery stores in Seattle neighborhoods; later it had a meat market and a Van de Kamp's Bakery with its prominent windmill sign. In the 1970s it was Carter's Deli; it was then a McDonald's; and it has been home since then to at least two East Asian restaurants.
