Description

Page 76 of brochure Seattle and the Orient (1900). This page includes text plus a group of four photos collectively captioned "Some general views of Seattle Hardware Co." There is also a little bit of hand-drawn decoration in the center of the page, between the photos.

Seattle Hardware Co. had several buildings over the years. This would not be the seven storey building at First Avenue South and South King Street (built 1904–1905; that building survives as of 2007; the company does not); some details in Image:Seattle Hardware Co. - 1900.jpg make it clear that this is the building at 819-823 First Avenue mentioned in the caption of Downtown Seattle looking north from James Street, Seattle, ca. 1900 in the University of Washington Libraries Digital Collections.

This would have been torn down to build the Colman Building.

The photos are individually captioned. Clockwise from top left:

  • "Ship chandler's dept. of Seattle Hdwr. Co."
  • "Builders supply display rooms. Seattle Hdwr. Co."
  • "Delivery teams of Seattle Hdwr. Co."
  • "Exterior Seattle Hardware Co." Right at the corner over the ground floor appears to be a number "823", which might be a good clue to what building this was.
