Summary edit

Description
English: Sedgwick Aqueduct. This carried the Lancaster Canal, now long disused, over the main road in Sedgwick village. It is unusual in being a skewed bridge - most canal bridges being at right angles to the road that they cross, to simplify design and minimise materials used. A skew bridge avoids the need to put a bend in the road and was state of the art bridge building at the time - special techniques being required to maintain strength in the angled construction. Designed & built by John Rennie.
