Summary edit

Description
English: Up freight entering Selby station off the swing-bridge.
View northward, towards York etc. on the ex-North Eastern ECML, also Hull. On the left is Selby North Box, which controlled traffic on the lines over the bridge. The additional signalbox, on its gantry above the northern - opening - section of the swing-bridge over the River Ouse, can be seen in the background; this Box controlled - also by semaphore signals - the river traffic, which had priority. Traffic on the ECML over the swing-bridges at Selby, and at Naburn nearer York, was severely handicapped and this was one reason (the other being subsidence due to coal-mining) for the construction of the 14-mile Selby Deviation, opened in October 1973, between Temple Hirst on the ECML north of Doncaster and Colton on the Leeds - York line, in order to enable much higher speeds. Traffic between Hull and Leeds, however, still has to run over the Selby swing-bridge. The Up Class F freight is headed by LNE B16/3 4-6-0 No. 61418.
