English: The 432-unit Senate Square apartment complex (background), located at 201 I Street, N.E., and the 44-unit condominium, the Landmark Lofts at Senate Square (foreground), located at 800 Third Street, N.E., in the Near Northeast neighborhood of Washington, D.C. The photo was taken at the intersection of Third and H Streets, N.E.
Senate Square is comprised of restored buildings and two, twelve-story towers, completed in 2008, that were designed by architect Philip Esocoff. Following an aborted attempt at selling the units as condominiums, Senate Square was converted into apartment rentals. The troubled property went into receivership in late 2009, and in February 2010, Senate Square was sold at auction for $121,000,000. The Landmarks Lofts at Senate Square is housed in two Italianate-style buildings which originally served as a convent and nursing home, the Little Sisters of the Poor Home for the Elderly, from 1874 until the 1970s, and as the Capital Children's Museum from the 1970s until 2004. Renovation of the Landmarks Lofts was completed in 2008. Notable residents include Anthony Williams, a former mayor of Washington, D.C., and Sheila Johnson, a businesswoman who made her fortune by co-founding Black Entertainment Television. |
