I predicted that hewould be one of the seven Republican senators who wouldvote for the acquittal of President Johnson in his impeach-ment trial. He was one. He subsequently abandoned theRepublican party, by which he had been elected to theSenate, returning to the Democratic party, with which hehad been formerly allied. The ablest Democratic senators in the Thirty-ninth Con-gress were Reverdy Johnson, Thomas A. Hendricks, andCharles A. Buckalew. Johnson was decidedly English inpersonal appearance; rotund, rosy, and jolly. He repre-sented, in part, Maryland. He used to undress completelyand take a midday sleep of an hour in bed at home daily;a very sociable man of great ability, and strong love ofthe Union. In youngmanhood he was second in a duel; his principals opponentbeing a poor marksman, accidentally shot Johnson in theeye and destroyed its sight. He was a fastidious dresser, astrong debater on legal and constitutional questions, alwayscourtly and considerate, seldom vituperative or sarcastic.He was a broad-guaged, scholarly statesman. Afterwardhe filled the exalted position of Minister of the UnitedStates at the Court of Saint James. Hendricks was a placid, self-poised, graceful, dignified,erect, well-groomed, handsome gentleman, with a perennialsmile and dignified demeanor. He was deliberate in speech,seldom violent, rather cold, calm, and judicial; inclined tobe pessimistic. He was a pleasing speaker, but could notbe ranked as a great orator. He seemed to be constantly ondress parade, as if conscious of still greater future politicaldistinction, which he did eventuall
