Serments, prononcés à Strasbourg le 14 février 842, par lesquels ils se reconnaissent des territoires : la partie francophone pour Charles, le domaine germanophone pour Louis. Comme c'est la langue qui détermine le partage, et pour être compris de tous, les rois prêtent serment en langue vulgaire : le roman pour Charles, le tudesque (germain) pour Louis. Entre ces deux ensembles linguistiques, une longue bande de terre s'étirant du Nord au Sud est dévolue à Lothaire qui lui laissera son nom, la Lorraine, et deviendra à la fin du Moyen Âge le puissant duché de Bourgogne. Ce partage en trois parts à peu près équivalentes est entériné par le traité de Verdun en 843. |
