“Planche cinquantième. - Sextus de Chéronée : statue antique de la galerie du Muséum. C'est d'après l'autorité de quelques médailles grecques qui présentent le portrait de Sextus, qu'on s'est déterminé à donner son nom à cette statue. Il était l'un des précepteurs de Marc-Aurèle, et oncle du célèbre historien Plutarque. Sa barbe, ses cheveux, sa tunique et son manteau, ou pallium, sont entièrement dans le style grec, et se rapportent au temps où l'on présume que cette statue a été faite. La tête est antique, mais elle a été rapportée ; le travail en est précieux ; l'exécution des détails et la beauté de l'ensemble retracent le goût qui régnait généralement chez les sculpteurs du temps des Antonins. L'ouvrage est en marbre grec.” |
