| Description | The North China News (an English paper established in 1850) Building (left), now the AIA Building, in the Bund, Shanghai, 3 May 2009. The core of the Bund was a British settlement which then merged with an adjacent American settlement and French quayside area. Gradually, it was enlarged to accommodate Dutch, Russian, German, Italian, Japanese and Belgian interests with consulates, banks, trading centres, hotels, clubs etc. Much of it was rebuilt in the late 19th Century/early 20th Century in the Beaux Arts style. The Bund thrived until the late 1940's when the Communists took over China. In the 1950's most of the financial institutions moved out. In the 1980's, the area revived. |
