My spouse's uncle Elstner Hilton took this photo in Japan between 1914 and 1918. I wish I knew enough about Japanese culture to identify the activity this man is engaged in. My best (and only) guess is that he's honing ink stones for use in calligraphy. I base this on the stack of rectangular stones at the rear of his work space on the right. They might be the finished product. |
