DescriptionShinner & Mead, Monday Market Street, Devizes, Wiltshire. 1870.jpg |
English: Shinner & Mead Provision Merchants & Tallow Chandlers staff outside their Monday Market Street store in Devizes, Wiltshire, England.
Monday Market Street runs to the right and up to where the corner building is in the picture. That corner shop is now called Make Do and Mend and is on the corner of Maryport Street and the Brittox. The building was demolished and replaced by a larger premises comprising 3 floors in 1902. The owners at the time of newer premises were Stratton and Sons with Mead. That building too was demolished and replaced by modern one where now M&S are situated. The photo-card is c.1870s, with no indication of photographer or publisher. The edges of the photograph have been trimmed of damage. |

Building still exists in 2018 very much as seen here, but as an electronic cigarette outlet
This description is incorrect, as Monday Market Street is to the left of the subject premises, which now form the entrance to Sainsbury’s, on the corner of Sidmouth Street.
Stratton Sons and Mead did indeed have the premises redeveloped, but as Wiltshire’s on this site.
They moved premises to a much larger building at the top of The Brittox, at the western end of Maryport Street.
