Summary edit

Description
English: Shropshire Union Canal Bridge No 40, near Norbury, Staffordshire. This is in Grub Street Cutting. Double Culvert bridge carries a bridleway on top, and a stream through two culverts. Originally called the Birmingham and Liverpool Junction Canal and started in 1826, engineered by Thomas Telford,it was eventually opened in 1835 several months after his death. In order to make the route as straight (and short) as possible with the technology of his time, the canal was built on many long embankments, and through many cuttings, some very deep. Merger with competing railways in 1845 resulted in the present name of the Shropshire Union Canal.
