Description

Shwe Nandaw Kyaung

In 1852, Burmese lost British Empire in Anglo-Burmese War II. Burmese were forced to pay an indemnity of one million pounds sterling(then US $5million ) to British and sign a commercial treaty. Therefore, King Bagan got depression and always became intoxicating that is why King Mindon dethroned his elder brother, King Bagan in 1853 and moved capital to Mandalay. In 1857, the Mandalay Royal Palace was built with 114 halls for 5 years. Among 114 halls, east thirty two halls were called Eastern Royal Halls. King Mindon died in one of the Eastern Royal Halls in 1878 and his son, King Thibaw ascended the throne. Since King Thibaw was in great sorrow for his father's dying, he had taken the Sabbath in the hall where King Mindon died for one year(1878-1879). And then, King Thibaw donated that hall as a monastery to a venerable monk. King Thibaw gilded the whole of the monastery and we can see even on drain. Many years later, the gold on the outside disappeared because of the weather. So we named as Golden Palace Monastery. It is different from any other monastery as it had been used by kings. We can see there is a royal couch which is made of wooden in the monastery. Moreover, throne and the wooden ornaments can be seen. That decorations make it difference from other monastery. We will see figures in relief which are striked from inside and fine arts of early 19th century. And then we will find in wonder ten Jatakas, the wooden sculptured depicting episodes of the Buddha's embryo. There are also two Lawkanat statues in front of the royal couch.
