its crest rises above the city in a perpetualinvitation of sylvan charm and rest. The skirts of itsslope, below the limits appropriated to the public park, are covered with palazzi and villas peeping out of thefoliage. The park is approached usually from thesouth-east and north-east sides, in each case by a seriesof winding drives intersected by more direct footpaths. On the latter side (by Fletchers Field), the MountainElevator carries passengers in specially-constructedcars some distance up towards the foot of the chiefascent, and then climbs a precipitous steep to thecrest. The charms of the mountain, however, aremost thoroughly seen by following the course of thedrives which encircle it, which were designed, to-gether with the general plan of development of thePark, by the celebrated Frederick Law Olmsted, wholaid out Central Park, New York. Among the land-marks most to be noticed are : the High LevelReservoir, the General City Reservoir (seen some 52 SIGHTS AND SHRINES OF MONTREAL.
