Summary edit
Description |
English: A U.S. Navy Sikorsky HSS-1 Seabat (BuNo 137852) armed with a Mk 101 Lulu nuclear depth charge, circa in 1960. It was deployed by the U.S. Navy beginning in 1958. Note: the description of the location as "Long Island, New York" is doubtful, as the helicopter was assigned to the Naval Air Test Center (NATC) at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland (USA). No naval air station existed on Long Island at that time. Original caption: "330-PSA-1-61-1: Navy’s Atomic Depth Bomb “Lulu”. Lulu, is the nickname for the Navy’s atomic bomb pm a HSS-1 Anti-Submarine Helicopter at Long Island, New York. Lulu is designed for fast accurate strikes against submarines by nearly all types of Navy aircraft. Its kill radius covers vast areas, giving enemy submarines small chance of escape. The S2F, an anti-submarine warfare aircraft, also carries four conventional acoustical-homing torpedoes and two high velocity air rockets. Photograph released December 30, 1960." |
