Silicified, solitary rugose corals in limestone from the Pennsylvanian of Utah, USA. (DMNH 28374, Denver Museum of Nature & Science, Denver, Colorado, USA) This is a block of marine fossiliferous limestone that has been acid-etched to reveal dozens of solitary rugose corals ("horn corals"). Solitary rugose corals have tapering calcitic skeletons. During life, a polyp (sea anemone animal) lived in a cup-like depression at the top of each skeleton. The fossils has been silicified (replaced by quartz/silica - SiO2). Silicified fossils are more resistant to weathering than surrounding host rocks. Upon weathering and erosion, such fossils stand out in relief. The same effect results from immersing the rock in acid (as in this case).
