Text Appearing After Image:
SPOOIy SII^K Many attempts have been made to find a substitute for silk, espe-cially for sewing purposes. Cotton thread, in imitation of silk, is soldunder various names, but vegetable fiber becomes worthless if mildewfrom dampness gets in its work, whereas silk is in its element whenwet, as the following incident proves : In 1874 a silk mill was totallydestroyed by the breaking of the reservoir dam, and sewing silk wasscattered for miles below, and has been plowed up by farmers fre-quently since and found to have its original strength. A tangledmass, weighing several pounds, was found in 1901, having been twenty-seven years in the mud at the bottom of the mill pond. After wash-ing and drying, the color (black) was good, its luster fair, andits strength unimpaired. Manufacturers, tailors, dressmakers, andwomen everywhere should profit by this hint. In fact it is pennywise and pound foolish to use poor material in a needle for any pur-pose, and the growing popularity of Corticelli Silk
