Title |
Silver Sceat, Series A, Type A2 (reverse) |
||
Description |
English: A coin of Series A, Type A2 in silver, a sceat of Anglo-Saxon times, belongs to the so-called primary phase of the coinage (when it moves from pale gold to silver). The upper part of the obverse is in good condition, but the lower part, as the reverse, has been badly scratched. On the obverse there is a crowned bust, with inscription TIC in front. Behind the head there is a large ‘A’ sideways (which is characteristic of Series A, Type A2 coins). Interesting features are the linked annulets. There are normally just two, one above, one below the A, but the linked upper annulet also appear on a coin from the Aston Rowant hoard (now in the British Museum), to which indeed, judging by the visible part, this might be die-linked. The reverse, should have a standard with TToII inside, nothing is visible. At 1.11g the coin is a little light but this is not surprising because of the fact that the reverse has been filed off. |
