Der 19,8 Kilometer lange Simplontunnel (Scheitelhöhe: 705 Meter) war bis zum Bau des Tunnels unter dem Ärmelkanal (1993) der längste Eisenbahntunnel der Welt. Er verbindet Brig im Schweizer Kanton Wallis (französisch: Valais) mit Iselle di Trasquera in Italien. Mit dem Bau war 1898 begonnen worden. Die Arbeiten an der einspurigen Röhre konnten 1906 abgeschlossen werden. Ein zweiter, parallel verlaufender Tunnel wurde 1922 vollendet. Knapp vor der Eröffnung der ersten Tunnelröhre tauchte die Frage auf, ob bei einem Betrieb mit Dampflokomotiven nicht mit einer tödlich wirkenden Verqualmung gerechnet werden müsste. Die AG Brown, Boveri & Cie. (BBC) in Baden/Aargau, weltweit einer der Pioniere der Elektrotechnik, anerbot sich, den Tunnel auf eigene Kosten zu elektrifizieren und zunächst probeweise auch zu betreiben. Zwei gerade für die italienische Valtellina-Strecke (Veltliner Bahn) im Bau befindliche Lokomotiven - die Fb 3/5 Nr. 364 und 365 - konnten dank dem Entgegenkommen der Italienischen Staatsbahnen (Ferrovie dello stato / FS) für den Simplon abgezweigt werden; die FS/Rete Adriatica stellten darüber hinaus leihweise drei vorhandene Veltliner Lokomotiven mit den Nummern 361, 362 und 364 (Erbauer: Maschinenfabrik Ganz, Budapest) zur Verfügung. So kam es zur Elektrifizierung mit Drehstrom 3000V / 16Hz wie bei der Veltliner Bahn. 1908 wurde der Probebetrieb von den SBB übernommen. Erst 1930, als die Zufahrtsstrecke durch das Rhonetal durchgehend mit der SBB-Wechselstrom-Norm von 15.000 V / 16 2/3 Hz elektrifiziert war, stellte man auch den Tunnel um und elektrifizierte die italienische Südrampe von Iselle bis Domodossola gleichfalls nach dem Schweizer Einphasenwechselstrom-System. |
