Summary edit

Description
English: Site conditions: The plot contains single story mud-houses occupied with about 100 tenants from 26 households (each hh about 4 persons = 100 people) and is located in Hilton area of Nakuru. The existing sanitation facilities were pit-latrines that have filled up and caused nuisance due to smell for the adjoining tenants. Shower facilities are fitted next to the pit-latrines.

Interventions: As Hilton is a rather rocky area and digging pits costs about 1000 KSH (approx. EUR 10,-) per feed the UDDT solution was considered. Above the old pit latrines a new structure was erected with a 3 door UDDT (single-chamber). Construction time was from August to December 2008. The available space around the toilet is very little, making it hard to empty the chambers. It is proposed to build a shelf above the chambers to temporarily store and pre-dry the filled buckets. The urine is piped into a storage jerry can with overflow into the old pit latrines serving as a soak pit. A hand wash facility was added to the facility that also receive the laundry and other wash water from the families since there is no other place to dispose of. Then this grey water as well the shower water is channeled into a grey water recycling unit with a settling and wetland system similar to the other projects. The cleaned and recycled water will be piped into a small garden or soaked away. So far only the toilet is operational.
