| Description |
On 27 November 1940, the 16,712-ton New Zealand Shipping Company liner 'Rangitane' was sunk by two German merchant raiders, 'Orion' and 'Komet', 550 km off East Cape. As nzhistory.net.nz notes, the British-owned vessel was the largest Allied merchant ship to be sunk by a German surface vessel during the Second World War. Fifteen people were killed during the early morning attack, while the remaining 297 passengers and crew were taken prisoner. The New Zealand authorties reacted quickly. After warning all incoming vessels to stay 200 miles away from the point of attack, both naval and air forces were dispatched to hunt for the German raiders.
