DescriptionSiop Twm Pen Stryd, Moelfre - geograph.org.uk - 1341982.jpg |
English: Siop Twm Pen Stryd, Moelfre The shop on the left is known as Siop Twm Pen Stryd (=the shop of Tom top of the street). Thomas Lewis, or Twm Pen Stryd, a young Moelfre seaman was an AB on the emigrant ship Cospatrick lost through fire in the South Atlantic in 1874. Of the 479 on board only 62 managed to get away in the two surviving lifeboats. One sank within hours leaving the other with 3 crewmen, including Twm, and 27 passengers drifting. Nine days later it was spotted by a Dundee bound vessel with 5 only aboard. It turned out that they had survived by drinking the blood and eating the livers of those who had died. Thomas Lewis was said to have been the one instrumental in the survival of the five.
