His subsequent military achievements at Fort Ticonderoga, Crown Point, Lake Champlain and Fort Niagara and the decisive surrender of Montreal in 1760 earned him military renown. For a short time, he was Governor-General of British North America. He was knighted in 1761 and then became Baron Amherst of Holmesdale, Kent in 1776, and finally Baron Amherst of Montreal, Kent in 1788. In the portrait miniature, he is dressed in ceremonial armour and wears the Order of Bath. A portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds, now in the Amherst College Collection of the Mead Art Gallery, inspired this copy as well as prints of this subject. / Après la prise de Louisbourg en 1758, Jeffery Amherst (1717-1797) fut nommé commandant en chef de l'armée britannique en Amérique du Nord. Ses exploits militaires ultérieurs à Fort Ticonderoga, à Crown Point, au lac Champlain et à Fort Niagara, ainsi que la capitulation décisive de Montréal en 1760 lui ont valu sa renommée militaire.Pendant une courte période, il fut gouverneur général de l'Amérique du Nord britannique. Il fut fait chevalier en 1761, puis devint baron Amherst d'Holmesdale, dans le Kent, en 1776, et enfin baron Amherst de Montreal, dans le Kent, en 1788.Sur ce portrait miniature, il est en tenue de cérémonie et porte l’insigne de l'ordre du Bain. Un portrait exécuté par sir Joshua Reynolds, maintenant conservé dans la collection du Amherst College à la Mead Art Gallery, a inspiré cette copie de même que des estampes.Sir Horace Walpole décrit ainsi Amherst :« C'était un homme d'une persévérance et d'un courage indomptables, mais il agissait d'une façon posée et méthodique. Prévoyant, conciliant et détendu, Amherst prenait ses décisions avec fermeté, ne précipitant ni ne retardant le règlement d'une affaire, et l'envisageant dans son ensemble en vertu de l'autorité qui lui était conférée. » |
