La estrella SIRIO o SIRIUS (Alfa Canis Major) se encuentra a 8 años luz de distancia del Sol siendo la más brillante de los dos hemisferios celestes. Su significado proviene del griego: "la ardiente, o la refulgente" con una magnitud aparente de -1,46. Es una estrella blanca y tiene una compañera enana blanca a unos 6" de separación. También se la llamó por los griegos κύων (kion, perro), Sotis por los egipcios, o por los árabes como Al Shi'ra al Abur al Yamaniyyah, que significa la estrella brillante del paso por el Yemen (al ponerse indica esa región). Los árabes llamaron a esta constelación como Al Kalb al Akbar (el perro grande) o Al Kalb al Jabbar (el perro grande de Orión). Tomada con mi telescopio reflector URANO 100, espejo primario de 10 cms. de abertura, 1 mt. de distancia focal, ocular de 14 mm (72 aumentos) y cámara CyberShot de 11 Mpx.
