Summary edit

Description
English: View West-Southwest of the Hart-Haswell Walkway passing through the site of Castle Eden Railway Station. The photographer is believed to be stood close to the eastern end of the station's up (southbound) platform although nothing remains of the platform itself; a section of fencing (right) visible through the trees marks the original path from the station booking office (now a private house) to the up platform. The publisher is unaware of exactly when the station opened but it is known that it was a stop on the route of the Hartlepool Dock & Railway Co. line of 1835 which was later linked to other contemporary lines to form the North Eastern Railway's inland West Hartlepool to Sunderland via Haswell and West Hartlepool to Ferryhill Lines. Contemporary maps suggest that the station consisted of a two split platforms, either-side of the road bridge with the booking office/ waiting room above the up platform; there was a where modern housing can be seen beyond the trees on the right of the photograph. The station lost its passenger service in 1952 but is believed to have remained open to goods until 1966 and a single line through it was retained until around 1984.
