Sjökort över Medelhavet
Description

Sjökort/karta över västra delen av Mediterranean Sea (Q4918), inklusive spanska och nordafrikanska kusten. Kartan trycktes i Amsterdam på 1700-talet av den kända kartografen Johannes II van Keulen (Q31209938), sannolikt under perioden 1726-1734.

Kartan står angiven som tryckt i ”the Crowned Pilote” (de Gekroonde Lootsman på holländska). Detta var von Keulens familjeföretags byggnad i vilken de tillverkade och sålde nautiska kartor och hade så varit sedan 1670-talet då Johannes van Keulen den äldre etablerade sig i Amsterdam.

Sannolikt åsyftas Johannes van Keulen den yngre född 1704. Han var son till kartografen Gerard van Keulen (Q31209942) och sonson till Johannes van Keulen (Q1983825) (1654-1715). Gerard avled 1726 varpå sonen Johannes tog över företaget. Johannes utsågs 1743 till "Official Chartmaker of the Dutch East Indies Company", en titel som familjens företag höll fram till Holländska ostindiska kompaniets upplösning 1799. Företaget sysslade från Johannes tid också med nautiska instrument. Efter hans död (1755 eller 1770) drevs familjeföretaget vidare av hans änka och söner. Ytterligare generationer av familjen van Keulen drev företaget till 1844.
