Med tid-ningen Punch, hvilken 1841 började utkomma, ville den het-lefrade Cruikshank af flera skäl ej ha något att göra, ehurumånga af hans teckningar skulle ha passat utmärkt i dennapublikation. En sådan är den vid slutet af 1840-talet tillkomna»Min hustru är en begåfvad kvinna», där han skämtar med deemanciperadc damerna och skildrar otrefnaden i ett hem, dären skrifvande dam är härskarinna (bild 113). Dråplig är hennestankfulla afböjande gest med något af: Tyst, stilla — nu kommersnilleblixten. ICn aldrig så kort framställning af George Cruikshanks lifvore ofullständigt, om ej hans nykterhetsteckningar berördes.Både hans faders och Gillrays sorgliga exempel på dryckcnskapens 134 ENGLAND OMKRING 1800.

113. iSIl.N HUSTRU ÄR EN BEGÅFVAD KVINNA.Karikatyr af Cruikshank. 184Q. vådor hade gjort honom teoretiskt intresserad för mätthghet,men själf hade han ej nekat sig att dricka rätt grundhgt. Flerabilder redan från 1820-talet visade, hvilken fara han ansåg ginvara för England, och 1847 utgaf han The Bottle i åtta teck-ningar, där han, på samma sätt som Hogarth skildrade liderlig-hetens utveckling, tecknar spritens förbannelse. Dickens uttrycktesin beundran för detta i England ofantligt spridda arbete.Konstnären beslöt sig nu för att bli absolutist och verkadeåterstoden af sitt lif nästan uteslutande för nykterheten. Där-igenom kom han alldeles ifrån andra och konstnärliga synpunkteroch utvecklades till fullkomlig fanatiker och hygienfantast. Detofinkänsliga sätt, hvarpå han angrep den måttligaste vindrickareeller rökare — ty Bort med tobaken! blef också hans lösen —, ur-säktades dock på grund af hans ädla afsikter och goda hjärta.
