Description

On February 7th 1963, New Zealand's worst bus crash occurred on Brynderwyn Hill. The bus was chartered by the Maori Affairs Department and was returning from Waitangi Day celebrations carrying 35 passengers from the Auckland area. The Brynderwyns is range of hills lying between Waipu and Wellsford, with a steep, narrow and winding road. The ridge extends east-west across the Northland Peninsula in northern New Zealand some 60 kilometres south of Whangarei, from the southern end of Bream Bay in the east to the Otamatea River. The brakes of the bus failed near the top of the hill, and although the driver negotiated several bends on the road, he could not make the last bend near the bottom of the hill, and the bus fell about 30 metres to the floor of the valley of the Piroa Stream below. There were 15 fatalities and 21 serious injuries. No-one on board the bus escaped serious harm, and this remains the worst bus crash in New Zealand history.

The sketch map was drawn by one of the "Waitangi Working Party", five members of the Auckland District Maori Council, who were travelling the same route on 7 February, and stopped to help at the scene of the accident. They had arrived before any emergency services, and took charge of the response, organising other members of the public to shelter the injured from the hot sun with umberellas and blankets, helping the only doctor on the scene, and moving the bodies of those who had died to the other side of the stream. The other map is from the Ministry of Works drawn up during the official investigation into the crash. The items are both from a file held in the Auckland Archives New Zealand Regional Office. Historian Leigh Bosch, a researcher at our Auckland Regional Archives New Zealand office, is currently writing a book about the tragedy.
