Description
English: The battle of Copenhagen, by Christian August Lorentzen. The painting was ordered by the king (Crown Prince Frederick). It portrays the battle of Copenhagen 1801. The scenery is shown as seen from the tower of "Vor Frues Kirke" ("Our Lady of Copenhagen", the Copenhagen Cathedral). It is believed that the painting gives a relatively correct picture of the battle around 13:00 hours. The Fortress Trekroner [Three Crowns] is located in the upper left of the picture flying a flag, in front of Trekroner is the smaller fort "Lynetten". The flag ship Dannebrog can be identified as the burning ship in the center. Features still visible today: The Flag, Dannebrog, flying from the Sixtus battery: This is the "Flag of the Kingdom" (and flown here from 1788 to today). The mast crane of Christian IV (the white building to the center-left of the picture) and the fortification line around the naval base Holmen, including the Redan line. Both still exist.
