Description

On Saturday, January 2, 2016, 15 BLM staff and volunteers participated in the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area Christmas Bird Count. Coordinated by BLM employee Jeanne Tinsman and Red Rock Audubon Society Vice-President Jack Ruckdeschel, teams covered five different areas within a count circle measuring 15 miles in diameter. 1,948 individual birds of 81 species were identified and counted. These numbers are both new highs for the count.

Some of the highlights included the observation of a Western Screech-Owl at Red Spring in Calico Basin (first bird of the count heard calling before dawn); a variety of waterfowl on golf course ponds; new high counts of American Robins and Spotted Towhees throughout Red Rock Canyon; and a Great Horned Owl at Wheeler Camp Spring (the last bird observed during the count).

This count circle is one of more than 2,200 areas surveyed annually at this time of year. Count circles can be found in the United States, Canada and throughout Central and South America. Data is submitted to the National Audubon Society, and is used for a variety of population studies.
